Black Belt Camp April 2010

The Founder of QSDTA Sabum Graham Moulden conducted an all Black Belt in April, the second such camp in the past 8 years. Whilst Regional Instructors conduct monthly Black Belt classes and Senior Instructors attend annual Masters Seminars it is important to recognize that these activities usually focus on content. General Choi Hong Hi developed Taekwon-Do based on proven scientific methods and provided a set of Tenets to help students build a strong character whilst studying this dynamic Art.

Teaching the art requires more than content and Tenets. It is essential that once a student reaches Black Belt that they are equipped with the appropriate skills to pass on what they have leant and encourage juniors to continue their Taekwon-Do studies. The wearing of black around the waist carries with it a great responsibility and black belt students should constantly be aware that their actions and words will influence those junior to themselves.

The Academy is a geographically diverse organization with some branches thousands of kilometers apart.

Thirty-two Black Belts from Cairns, Mackay, Bunbaderg and Brisbane attended the camp. Mr. Moulden and Sabum Rachanok travelled from Thailand. The coming together of all Black Belts from time to time not only ensures consistency in what they all take back to their respective branches, but also provides valuable interaction between family members (Taekwon-Do family).

Instructors at the Academy were all Academy beginners at some stage and they understand why it is important to treat students with respect whilst maintaining an appropriate level of discipline during training. “In an age where the current generation wants instant results it is difficult to attract members let alone maintain their interest” Mr. Moulden stated. “Whilst there are many martial art schools that fast track students to Black Belt the result is a false sense of achievement. The standard we set at the Academy is one that is attainable by all and equips students with not only sound personal self defence skills but also a strong moral character.” He concluded Mr. Moulden has been instructing for over 30 years and used the camp to introduce several new initiatives that will benefit both Instructors and students.
